Thinking of Stranger Things

I don't care what anyone says—I loved the final season of Stranger Things. It'll always be one of my favorite series.

I watched a documentary about the costume creation recently, and they truly nailed the 80s fashion. The clothing feels thoughtful, nostalgic, and very authentic.

That said, speaking as a vintage jewelry seller, I couldn't help but notice how overlooked jewelry was throughout the series. Every time a noticeable piece appeared on a woman, it tended to look distinctly cheap and generic.

Yes, the 80s saw an explosion of inexpensive jewelry from emerging markets like China and Taiwan-but that wasn't the whole picture. A well-off suburban woman like Karen Wheeler absolutely could (and likely would) have worn recognizable mid- to higher-end costume jewelry brands of the era - Monet, Napier, KJL, Joan Rivers, Kirks Folly, Liz Claiborne, Les Bernard and so many more. The 1980s were a decade of blooming costume jewelry design, with many brands maintaining truly high standards of quality and production

Instead, we mostly see unbranded plastic bead necklaces that don't really reflect her status or the richness of the period. For a show that gets clothing so right, the lack of attention to jewelry feels like a missed opportunity. #vintagejewelry #80s #thinkingofstrangerthings
