Mourning Jewelry Revival Necklace 1920-1940 - Lacquered Jet And Horn

Chain: The chain is composed of oval horn links with a black lacquered finish, showing translucent brown undertones where the surface coating has worn with age. The natural fibrous texture and warm organic tone are visible under magnification, typical of genuine horn. Approximately 30-40% of the links have partial breaks occurring on one side only, leaving the links still connected and functional. The wear appears age-related rather than structural failure, and the chain remains flexible and wearable. Length: 20 in.

The pendant features a high-relief carved rose motif with a glossy black finish. While the back and edges strongly suggest carved jet, the surface carving itself lacks the crisp definition typical of finely carved jet. The motif appears to be integral to the base rather than applied separately, indicating that the entire pendant was carved from a single piece. The front shows a smooth lacquered surface—an authentic finishing technique often used on organic materials during the Art Deco era to achieve a uniform, piano-black sheen. Length: 1.75 in.
